On the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the unification of Italy, the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr James Alix Michel has sent a congratulatory letter to the government and people of Italy.

On behalf of the people and government of Seychelles President Michel said that this anniversary was a testament to the true spirit of unity of the Italian people, and a show of solidarity to be emulated by other nations.

“Seychelles too, shares the same and beliefs and we are committed to promoting and sustaining our solidarity,” said the President

“As one of the first countries to recognise our independence, Seychelles and Italy has always been bound together by the strong principle and virtues, shared by our two nations. I am convinced that this excellent relationship will gain fresh impetus and strengthen the existing bond between our two countries.”

At an event held last night to celebrate the occasion, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-paul Adam, addressed the Italian community in Seychelles on behalf of the government and gave a toast in the name of the Presidents of the two countries.

“Italy has demonstrated that progress is faster and more effective when done in a unified manner,” said the Minister, “They have shown how some things different and unique come together to create something beautiful, and Seychelles, like Italy is a nation that has had to be forged.”

The Italian Honorary Consul to Seychelles, Mr. Claudio Izzi addressed the gathering and spoke of the remarkable history and achievements of Italy and the passion the local Italian community had to contributing to Seychelles’ similar development:

“150 years of Italy, of people with undeniable skill that have been exporting talent, culture and spirit of enterprise all over the world. Here today, we have a proud group of those Italians that have chosen to make a significant contribution to the development of Seychelles, a country much younger than ours but that is paving the way for a shining future more then a century after Italy.”

Seychelles and Italy established diplomatic relations on the 29th June 1976.
